[Sticky] Before the first job: what belongs in a site and machine safety check?

A useful pre-start discussion begins with the machine manual, the attachment manual and the rules that apply where the machine will be used.

Topics worth checking include:

• operator training, competency and any local licensing requirements
• guards, interlocks, controls, alarms and the restraint system
• leaks, damage, tracks or tyres, pins, couplers and attachment locking
• machine and attachment limits for the planned load
• ground conditions, slopes, edges, overhead hazards and underground services
• visibility, lighting, weather and communication
• a clear exclusion zone for bystanders
• safe loading, tie-down and transport arrangements
• the correct protective equipment for the task
